Humanitarian Settlement Program
“I’ve learned through the years that it’s not where you live, it’s the people who surround you that make you feel at home.”
– J B McGee
Although we should all have the right to choose where we live, this sadly isn’t the case for the thousands of people who become our clients. Asylum seekers and those from refugee, humanitarian and migrant backgrounds are often forced to flee their country, family and friends. The threat of persecution and physical, emotional and mental abuse due to their race, culture and/or religion usually means these individuals must undertake a new journey.
What’s the Humanitarian Settlement Program about?
This initiative was launched on 30 October 2017, replacing the two existing programs of Humanitarian Settlement Services and Complex Case Support. Melaleuca Australia is proud to have been selected by the Australian Government to deliver the Program throughout the Northern Territory as one of five national Service Providers. The Program’s aim is to help people from refugee or humanitarian backgrounds to settle in Australia by working in conjunction with other settlement and mainstream services. Adopting a needs-based case management approach, the services offered ensure the highest possible level of community integration and interaction for our clients.
How does the Program work?
The Program focuses on building the skills and knowledge our clients need to become self-reliant and active members of the Australian community and is available for the first five years of settlement to:
- Individuals
- Couples
- Families
- Women at Risk
- Children and youth
- Unaccompanied Humanitarian Minors
- Special Humanitarian Program clients by proposers
- Protection and Safe Haven Enterprise Visa’s
As financial stability is generally a fundamental goal for our clients, the Program is underpinned by assisting clients to learn English and gain the necessary education to enhance employment possibilities and better integrate into Australian life.

Our approach to supporting our clients successfully adjust to Australian life is holistic and concentrates on achieving outcomes in the following areas:
- Employment
- Education and training
- Housing
- Physical health, mental health and overall wellbeing
